Hey fellow narrative designers,
We’re reaching the tail end of the usual end-of-year hiring period, so try to get some apps in if you’re searching!
Another suggestion: if you have any downtime during what is, at least here in the US, the beginnings of the festive season, try joining one of the jams below or writing a short Twine project — ESPECIALLY if it’s whimsical and weird and only something you could write. Remember why you love to write. Abandon, for a moment, qualms about making your project “commercial”. If you do manage to achieve this task over the holidays, share it with the Narrative News community in the comments and I’ll signal boost it!
Keep your chin up! Despite the regular horridness of the industry, you’re persevering, and that’s truly the bravery it takes to make it in this biz.
Jams
The latest bitsy jam runs until November 11th and is a great opportunity for narrative designers who want to make a concise game solo, as it’s simple to use the bitsy editor. This month’s theme is “game manual.”
The Newbies Game Jam 2024 - Halloween Edition is another good opportunity to sharpen your skills in a low-stakes way.
Resources
If y’all are interested in fascinating horror game story analysis, look no further than Anna C. Webster’s Substack. The latest post is a great essay on Until Dawn and the complicated subject of using traditional folklore elements from cultures that are not one’s own.
Opportunities
The Cinematic Prose Writing Competition has a final deadline of Nov. 30th and features a very game-y prize: publication by Crazy Maple, the makers of the Chapters app. Additionally: some talent and literary agency contacts and $1,000.
If you’re looking to do some networking but don’t know where to start AND you’re from the UK, check out the UK Games Industry Slack Group! “With 6000+ members across all games disciplines, it's a great place for regional games workers in connect, chat, share and learn.”
If you’re in Helsinki, Finland, check out this game jobs fair on November 8th!
